This museum is designed with kids in mind, offering a variety of exhibits that encourage exploration and creativity. As soon as we arrived, my children were drawn to the Galvin Physics Forest, an outdoor area filled with oversized physics experiments. They spent hours launching rockets, building with giant blocks, and exploring the principles of motion and force through play.
Inside, the Imagination Workshop was another big hit, where the kids got to create their own inventions using a variety of materials. The museum does an excellent job of blending play with education, ensuring that the kids are learning while having fun. We also loved the Arroyo Adventure, an outdoor space that features a climbing area, water play, and even a giant ant tunnel that the kids can crawl through. Kidspace truly caters to young minds, making it a perfect destination for families with children of all ages.
4. Santa Monica Pier and Beach
For a classic Los Angeles experience, we spent a day at the Santa Monica Pier and Beach. The pier is an iconic family destination, and the moment we arrived, we could feel the excitement in the air. The kids immediately ran toward Pacific Park, the pier’s amusement park, where they couldn’t wait to hop on the Ferris wheel. The views from the top were spectacular, with the ocean on one side and the city skyline on the other.
After enjoying a few more rides, we grabbed some snacks and took a leisurely stroll along the pier. There’s a lively atmosphere with street performers, souvenir shops, and plenty of places to grab a bite to eat. But the highlight for my kids was undoubtedly the Santa Monica Beach itself. Upon arriving, we were captivated by the tram ride that takes visitors from the parking area up to the museum. The kids loved the ride, and the views of the city as we ascended were breathtaking.
Inside the museum, we picked up the Family Room Discovery Tour map, which guided us to several interactive exhibits. The Family Room itself is a hands-on area where kids can explore art through creative play. They could build with blocks, create their own sculptures, and even dress up in costumes inspired by the museum’s collection. We also joined one of the museum’s Family Tours, which are designed to engage children with stories and fun facts about the art on display.
The Central Garden was another highlight, where we spent time wandering through the beautifully landscaped paths and enjoying the outdoor sculptures. The combination of art, architecture, and nature made the Getty Center a rich and rewarding experience for the whole family.
6. La Brea Tar Pits and Museum
Stepping back in time, we visited the La Brea Tar Pits and Museum, a place where history and science come alive. The tar pits themselves are fascinating; these natural asphalt seeps have been around for tens of thousands of years and have preserved the remains of countless Ice Age animals. The Space Shuttle Endeavour exhibit was the highlight of our visit. Seeing the actual shuttle up close was awe-inspiring, and the exhibit provides a wealth of information about the history of space travel. The kids were particularly interested in the hands-on displays, where they could simulate piloting a shuttle and experience what it’s like to be an astronaut.
We also spent time in the Ecosystems exhibit, where we walked through different environments, from the desert to the polar regions. The Farmers Market has been a staple in Los Angeles since 1934, and it offers a charming mix of food stalls, specialty shops, and unique vendors. We wandered through the market, sampling delicious treats from different cuisines and picking up fresh fruit for a snack. The kids loved the variety of options, from homemade ice cream to gourmet popcorn.
Next door, The Grove is an open-air shopping and entertainment complex that feels like a lively village. We took a ride on the Grove Trolley, which is always a hit with children, as it takes you on a scenic loop around the complex. The central fountain, which features a choreographed water show set to music, was another highlight for the kids. We also caught a family-friendly movie at the theater, making it a well-rounded day of food, fun, and relaxation.
9. Descanso Gardens
For a peaceful escape from the city, we spent an afternoon at Descanso Gardens in La Cañada Flintridge. This 150-acre botanical garden is a paradise for nature lovers, with stunning landscapes that change with the seasons. The gardens are incredibly kid-friendly, with plenty of space for little ones to run around and explore.
We started our visit at the Enchanted Railroad, a miniature train that takes you on a ride through the gardens. For a magical end to our Los Angeles adventure, we visited the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood. This historic movie palace, owned by Disney, is a must-visit for families who love the magic of the movies. The theater itself is a work of art, with its ornate architecture and grand interior, setting the stage for a special cinematic experience.
We were lucky enough to catch a screening of a Disney classic, and the pre-show entertainment was just as exciting as the film itself. The kids were mesmerized by the live organ performance and the special effects that brought the theater to life. After the movie, we explored the theater’s lobby, which often features exhibits related to the film being shown.
El Capitan Theatre offers a unique and enchanting movie-going experience that’s perfect for families, making it a fitting conclusion to our journey through Los Angeles.
